RE: SAFETY MANAGEMENT COURSE

Summary: Details of courses available to be disseminated within departments.

Note:- suggest that application forms held by Departmental Office and/or Departmental Safety Supervisor.

Prompt distribution to staff would be appreciated

Details of the modular Safety Management Course are attached.

Note:-

[ each module is half-a-day

[ there are two COSHH modules one has a ‘Chemical’ bias and one has a ‘Biological/Microbiological’ bias so participants can choose the module most appropriate for them.

[ an accredited Electrical Safety Course is yet to be developed for technicians to do PAT testing. Possible delivery date early 2000.

[ a new "Refreshers" / Safety "Toolkit" course has been developed to consider the main factors in health and safety management.

[ if a participant fails to appear there will be a penalty charge of £10 per module (so account codes still required on application form).

AIMS OF OVERVIEW MODULE

This module is intended to provide

[ to consider safety policies, responsibilities for health and safety

[ general background knowledge for health and safety management systems

[ details of accident reporting and accident investigation procedures

[ details on how to conduct safety inspections and prioritise action items arising from these (ie risk assessment)

The courses are aimed in part at those who have as within their brief a responsibility for safety and in part at others (both staff and postgraduates) who wish to gain greater awareness of, and involvement in health and safety management issues.

The first session on this has been arranged for MONDAY, 1 NOVEMBER in Seminar Room K, Level 8, Worsley Building from 9.00am until 12.00pm. If you wish to attend application forms may be obtained from Departmental Office or Safety Supervisor.

AIMS OF CHEMICAL SAFETY MODULE

This module is intended to provide

[ information on the correct procedures for disposal of waste chemicals

This module is suitable for staff who wish to gain an appreciation of the regulations, for technical staff who may be involved with handling chemicals and for postgraduate students, especially those commencing their research.

This module is being run on Friday 26th November from 9.00am to 12.00pm in Seminar Room J, Level 8, Worsley Building.

This module covers a wide range of topics which are associated with a safe working environment, and is intended to provide participants with knowledge of

[ An understanding of manual handling assessments.

[ The main requirements for storage and use of gases.

[ Pressure Systems regulations and requirements for departments.

The module is open to both staff and postgraduates, but is primarily intended to give line managers an appreciation of the main issues associated with the above topics.

AIMS OF COURSE

This course is intended to provide

either

  • refresher training for those who have previously attended Safety Management Courses in the past.

or

  • a ‘toolkit’ for Safety Supervisors, or others with responsibilities for Health and Safety management. Course focuses on Safety Management from Policy through to Implementation to Monitoring.

 

This module is scheduled to be run in the second term.

 

The course is divided into three parts and participants can chose whether to go to all 3 or only to individual sections.
