Fixed term contract posts will be reviewed annually, it has been agreed. One review has already taken place; the second begins next month.
Human resources director Matthew Knight said the review would help the University continue to demonstrate it has good, transparent reasons for some posts being fixed term. The review anticipates European legislation on the issue, likely to be introduced within two years, he added. More detailed information about external contracts not being renewed must now also be supplied. Revised notification forms have been prepared and will be sent to heads of departments each month.
A statement of principles on the management of fixed term staff has been approved by Senate and Council following discussions at meetings of the staff committee, planning and resources committee and joint committee of the University and AUT, and is available here.
