Professor Chris Taylor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for teaching and learning, is to take over the research brief in the next session, Senate agreed on February 3. He will retain his special responsibility for lifelong learning.

Responsibility for teaching and learning will be taken by Professor John Macklin, who will also take on international affairs.

Mrs Lynne Brindley will retain the communications and information technology portfolio. Staff issues portfolio will continue to be overseen by Professor David Sugden, who will also continue to hold a general portfolio including space issues, colleges policy group and management committee for the safety services.

Professor Taylor's term of office is to be extended until July 2001, allowing him to oversee preparations for the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.

The responsibilities are subject to approval by Council.
