Professor Roger Hartley came to Leeds as a lecturer in Education in 1967. The Computer Based Learning Unit was established in 1969 and Professor Hartley was appointed Director in 1971, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1972 and to a Chair in computers and education in 1992.
He was involved in grants totalling more than £3m and directed several large collaborative research projects within Europe and the UK. His writings and publications established the Computer Based Learning Unit as a major force in this field.
