University pilots new computer systems

The replacement of the finance and human resource computer systems (see Reporter 413) is under way and three departments – Mechanical Engineering, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the School of Social Sciences – have been selected to act as pilot sites during the development phases of the project. A number of departmental representatives have been asked to work with the team and take part in workshops and discussion sessions.

The project team is also taking steps to keep all University staff informed of the project’s progress. A web site is being set up and there is an email address to which questions can be directed –

Briefing sessions will be arranged for departmental representatives. It is hoped some general sessions will be held along with open days to see the system as it is developed.

Training will be a key element of the project’s success and a strategy is being developed to ensure all staff who need to use the system are trained to the required levels. A help desk and other support services are also being established. Further details will be made available through the Reporter and the web site as the project develops but in the meantime questions can be addressed to the team by email.
