A national virtual library catalogue is the goal as universities struggle to cope with increasing student numbers and the growth of electronically-stored information.
The Electronic Libraries Programme eLib is aimed at making life easier for students and researchers by creating virtual catalogues in geographic or subject areas. Groupings of these catalogues could then be searched as a whole or in various combinations.
Lynne Brindley, the University's Librarian and Dean of Information Strategy, who chairs the national Committee for Electronic Information, hopes the latest series of eLib pilot projects will be a stepping stone to a virtual catalogue of all printed and digital information stored within the entire Higher Education sector in the UK.
