Council elections

In the recent elections by staff constituencies, the following candidates were successful (length of office in brackets):
All faculties – Dr D L Salinger (Pure Mathematics) (3 years); All members of the Faculties of Arts, Economic and Social Studies, Law and Education – Dr C L Baylies (Sociology and Social Policy) (3 years); The Senate – Professor P A Dowd (Mining and Mineral Engineering) (2 years). (A by-election will be held later this term to fill the remaining vacancy). Academic-related staff – Mrs K A Aveyard (Personnel) (3 years); Clerical staff – Mrs G Garbett (Physics and Astronomy) (3 years); Technical staff – Mr T Egan (Chemical Engineering) (3 years); Ancillary staff – No nominations were received from this category. The election regulations mean that the seat should remain vacant for 1997-98. However, the Council later this month is to be asked to agree, exceptionally, that this year’s election for ancillary staff should be re-run. Assuming that the Council agrees to that proposal, notices inviting nominations will be circulated in July.
