The UK's oldest and youngest higher education unions are to merge. The councils of the Association of University and College Lecturers and the Association of University Teachers voted independently to come together in September. Higher education academic and academic-related staff will, for the first time, be represented by one union. National Chairman of AUCL, Nigel Gates, said "academic and academic-related staff working in higher education today need, as never before, unified, powerful representation, and the forthcoming merger of AUCL and AUT will ensure that they get it."
