Joan Armstrong died at the beginning of May. Together with members of her family, Joan Armstrong supported the Department for many years. Her husband, Stuart, after retiring in the early 1980s from Huddersfield Polytechnic, became a very active member of the Department. Both Stuart and Joan were involved with the University's production of the Mystery Playes in 1983. Following Stuart's death, it was the wish of Joan and her children that an annual prize of £100 be set up in his memory.
The Armstrong Prize has been awarded for many years to students of the Department of Civil Engineering who demonstrate best all-round performance, taking into account both academic achievement and contribution to general University activities. Rare were the years when Joan did not attend the University to present the prize certificate.
The Department has been extremely grateful for the long and continued support of the Armstrongs.
